"Fossil Fish inlaid Desert Stripped Container"
Way back in February 1977 at our first Quartzsite show when our art form was fledgling Paul showed me a “fossil fish” and said “I’m going to inlay this in a box”. I said “Why?” I thought it was a weird and terrible idea. One of the most magnificent combinations of materials ever to be put together ie. The Desert Stripped Alabaster container lined with High Desert Juniper and inlaid with a Fossil Fish. Inlaying fossils and gemstones into boxes and bowls became a major and celebratory expression in our work. The Fossil Fish inlays are some of the most elegant and enduring pieces we’ve created. In the early years we always called them “our gas money home” because they were a guaranteed sell. Paul has one on his bench right now – a rare piece.

"Mescalito’s Moon"
For one week in 2004 we were the only artists allowed into the Split Mountain, California, Deposit - the rarest Alabaster deposit on the planet. After exploring that mine for 35 years we’d scoped out where the pockets of rare colored stone were to be found. Each day for five days we brought out 10,000 lbs of the rarest, most outrageous Alabaster the world has ever seen. This piece was carved from one of those rare pieces. Its magnificent figure goes from red to black to gold. Paul carved those delineations into the mountain ranges they implied, created a stacked container lined with High Desert Juniper, inlaid an Uvarovite mountain plain and a perfect Labradorite Moon. It was a mouthwateringly trippy piece and sold right away.

"Uvarovite and Amethyst Flower"
Back in the early 2000’s when the Russians came with suitcases filled with the deliciously green, sparkly, never been seen before Druzy Green Garnet from the Ural Mts. they called ‘Uvarovite’ we became totally addicted and purchased as much as we could. Inspired by the Uvarovite and the most pristine of Uruguayan Amethyst Crystals Paul expressed his love and wonder by creating a flower atop an elegant handcarved Green and Raspberry Alabaster Stacked Container lined with High Desert Juniper. Of course it sold right away to one of our beloved patrons who immediately recognized they’d never seen anything like it before and never would again!

"Heaven in White Alabaster and Quartz Crystals"
Everthing about this piece is exquisite. The pure White Alabaster, the shape of the container, the White Alabaster base it sits on and the magnificent Quartz Crystals inlaid into its lid and the base. Only Paul Hawkins puts together such magnificent shapes in Alabaster with such incredible materials. It was an ethereal piece, one I still dream of.

"Gemstone Sculpture Garden with Lapis Lazuli"
Who’s ever seen so much Lapis Lazuli in one place. We figured it was about 2200 carats of the finest Lapis inlaid into tentacles of the rarest of Orange Alabasters which grew out of the most elegant White Alabaster container lined with High Desert Juniper. The world until then had never seen such a piece!
