Ner Tamid - The Eternal Light
In every Jewish place of worship the Ner Tamid, the Eternal Light, floats above the ark which holds our sacred text of Torah, the five books of Moses. It reminds us of the Light of Freedom always present, always illuminating our path, guiding our hearts.
This handcarved Orange Alabaster Ner Tamid is suspended above the arch at the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley Synagogue. My experience in carving this inspiring piece was that it created itself, it led the way, it spoke - I listened and carved.
Orange. Flame. The Hebrew letters – flames - descending from Heaven. Stone. Alabaster – the Queen of Stones because she’s soft, inviting to the touch, translucent and colorful. This magic marriage of material and subject combined to create this transcendent piece.
My dream is to carve Ner Tamids – Eternal Lights for synagogues and places of worship around the world.
